Michael Petruccelli asks: What should you do – If you decide to stay during a hurricane? (1)

Michael Petruccelli says: Take responsibility for your decision. Before you decide you will not evacuate, accept full responsibility for that decision. Many times people disobey warning signs or evacuation orders thinking that if something bad happens they will be rescued.
o   In addition to folks winning the Darwin Award this way, emergency services personnel (a "scarce resource" during a disaster) are put unnecessarily into harm's way. Many potential rescuers have died or been injured in their attempts to rescue people. It is much safer to prepare and follow warnings.
o   If you are told to evacuate and decide not to do it, acknowledge your responsibility for your decision, and do not expect to be rescued later.
